Tops for violin, viola, cello, double bass

In our tonewood workshop in Latsch, three kilometers above Bergün we produce from November to April high quality tops for stringed instruments only from hand split quarters.
Geigenlager

The site and altitude (1,600 meters) of our well-ventilated storage facility assures a very gradual and complete drying of our tonewood.


Violin and viola soundboards are delivered as one piece or at customer’s request with middle cut.

Cello and bass soundboards are sawn as two pieces.

Grading criteria for violin and viola:

Masters fine: Free of defects, very tight, uniform grain, up to 1 mm distance between annual rings
Masters:Free of defects, very tight, uniform grain, 1 - 2 mm distance between annual rings
AAA: Tight, straight grain, not as uniform as Masters, very light run-out, up to 2.5 mm distance between annual rings
AA: Tight grain, slight color variation and light run-out
A: Wider grain, color variation and light run-out
B: Suitable for test models
 

Gradin criteria for Cello:

Masters:          Uniform grain, no color variations, 2 - 4 mm distance between annual rings
AAA: Even grain, not as uniform as Masters, light run-out
AA: Even grain, slight color variations and light run-out
A: Wider grain, color variation and light run-out
B: Suitable for test models
