Welcome to Tonewood.ch

We live where the spruce trees grow…

Graubünden, a rustic region in the middle of the Swiss Alps, is home to our company. At an altitude of 1300 meters, magnificent mountain spruce trees flourish and our sunny, but cold, climate assures an annual ring spacing that is even and tight—a prerequisite for high quality soundboards used in the making of musical instruments.

Available now - Thermally Modified Spruce Tops

After the test phase we are pleased to offer you our thermally modified spruce tops
for classical and steel string guitars and also for violins.

Our thermally-treated tops are heated to a minimum temperature of 160°C in our own dedicated thermal oven.  During the whole process they are under vacuum pressure.  As a result of this process known as torrefaction, the wood is “caramelized” and takes on a darker color.  The resin and by-products of the hemicellulose and the lignin also partially volatize.  As a result the tops are lighter in weight and after the torrefaction process exhibit a higher degree of sound conduction.  The wood’s ability to take on and shed moisture is also strongly reduced.

Advantages of thermally-treated spruce compared to untreated spruce:

- higher speed of sound transference (radially and longitudinally)

- lower density

- can be used immediately without further aging

- lower dimensional shrinkage and expansion of wood

I would like to say that the wood I have bought so far, spruce tops and arch top wood, is the most beautiful wood I have ever worked with. The spruce tops for acoustic guitars also gives me the exact typ of tone I am looking and it has a beautiful warm and special sound. I hear alot of people say you are more expensive than other suppliers but the excellent quality is worth it. I hope I will be able to visit your shop in the future."
